Bin ich noch ein Mädchen oder schon eine Frau? Und wenn ich eine Frau bin, was für eine möchte ich dann sein? Der elfjährigen Amy fehlen die Worte für derlei Fragen. Und Antworten hat sie gleich gar keine. In ihren Konflikten drücken sich die Gegensätze aus, die Amy in ihrem Umfeld wahrnimmt: hier die konservative, polygame, senegalesische Großfamilie, die gerade nach Paris gezogen ist, da die Mitschülerinnen, die für einen Tanzwettbewerb trainieren, um sich gegenüber den älteren Mädchen zu behaupten. Sie imitieren Bewegungen aus Musik- videos und inszenieren sich in stereotypen Posen, deren Wirkung ihnen noch kaum bewusst ist. Amys Versuch, in beiden Welten zu bestehen, führt zu Spannungen und Enttäuschungen und zwingt sie zu ständiger Verwandlung.

Am I still a girl or already a woman? And if I’m a woman, what kind do I want to be? Eleven-year-old Amy lacks the words to express these questions, and she doesn’t have any quick answers to them either. The conflicts in Amy’s life reflect the contradictory positions that she perceives in her surroundings: there’s her conservative, polygamous, Senegalese extended family, freshly resettled in Paris, and then there are her peers at school, practicing for a dance-off. Together they hope to hold their own against the older girls, imitating moves from music videos and performing stereotypical poses without any awareness yet for what they represent. Amy’s attempt to navigate both worlds leads to tension and disappointment while requiring constant transformation on her part.

Between uproars and spa days

Hong Kong, July 28, 2019. Screaming, tear gas, gunfire. One, two, retreat from the front line, push forward. We are in the midst of Hong Kong's protests and uprisings last summer. We march with the masses, hiding behind the shields, seeing our comrades shouting commands, keeping moving, fainting, being carried away. Everything is chaotic and frightening, but still organized and controlled. For 15 minutes I hold my breath, my heart is racing and at the same time keeps skipping beats. It is suffocating. Incredibly suffocating to experience a day of the Hong Kong riots so close. In my holiday-influenced July, I did hear and read about the situation, but unfortunately I didn't learn about it too much.
