In den Straßen fallen Schüsse, explodieren Granaten. Im Haus versuchen vier Geschwister gemeinsam mit ihrer Mutter, den Katzen und der Schildkröte, Frieden zu finden und einen normalen Alltag zu organisieren. Seit fünf Jahren tobt im ukrainischen Donbas der Krieg. Er hat mich schnell reizbar und böse werden lassen, meint Nastja. Ihre Schwester Myroslava, die Kamera studieren möchte, sagt: Krieg ist wie eine Leere. Um gegen das schwarze Loch anzukämpfen, dreht sie einen Film. Einen Film über das Leben ihrer Familie im Krieg, über die Ängste und kleinen Freuden. Regisseurin Iryna Tsilyk beobachtet den Alltag im Krieg und die Arbeit der Familie an dem Film. Ein Dokument der Resilienz und der Macht des Kinos.

Outside, the streets echo with the sound of gunfire and exploding grenades. Inside their house, four siblings, together with their mother, cats and turtle, attempt to maintain some semblance of peace and normality in their everyday lives. War has been raging in Ukraine’s Donbas for five years. Nastja says it has made her easily irritable and angry. Her sister Myroslava, who dreams of studying cinematography, remarks that war is like a void. To fight back against the black hole, she decides to make a film, one about her family’s life in wartime, about the fears and small joys. Director Iryna Tsilyk observes everyday life under the shadow of war and one family’s collective creative response in a testament to resilience and the power of cinema.

Between uproars and spa days

Hong Kong, July 28, 2019. Screaming, tear gas, gunfire. One, two, retreat from the front line, push forward. We are in the midst of Hong Kong's protests and uprisings last summer. We march with the masses, hiding behind the shields, seeing our comrades shouting commands, keeping moving, fainting, being carried away. Everything is chaotic and frightening, but still organized and controlled. For 15 minutes I hold my breath, my heart is racing and at the same time keeps skipping beats. It is suffocating. Incredibly suffocating to experience a day of the Hong Kong riots so close. In my holiday-influenced July, I did hear and read about the situation, but unfortunately I didn't learn about it too much.
