Ruanda 1973: Hoch oben in den Bergen, an einer der Quellen des Nils, behütet eine schwarze Marienfigur ein katholisches Mädchen- internat. Die Tage sind ausgefüllt mit Unterricht, Gottesdienst und praktischer Arbeit. Hier werden die Töchter von Politikern, Militärs und Geschäftsleuten ausgebildet; sie sollen später zur Elite des Landes gehören. In ihrem Lebenshunger, ihren Träumen und ihrer Ausgelassenheit sind die Mädchen sich ähnlich, egal ob Hutu oder Tutsi. Doch im Mikrokosmos der Schule und in den immer schärfer werdenden Auseinandersetzungen spiegeln sich auch die Verheerungen einer kolonialen Ordnung. Symbolträchtige Bilder weisen voraus auf eine Welle der Gewalt, die 1994 ganz Ruanda erfassen und zu einem Genozid führen wird.

Rwanda, 1973: high up in the mountains, at the source of the Nile, a black statue of the Virgin Mary watches over a Catholic boarding school for girls. Here, during days filled with classes, mass and practical work, the daughters of politicians, officers and businessmen are educated to one day become productive members of the country’s elite. Whether Hutu or Tutsi, the girls share their curiosity, dreams and joie de vivre. However, the social dynamics and increasing conflicts that characterise the school microcosm mirror the ravages wrought by the colonial order. Deeply symbolic images hint at the genocidal violence that would later engulf the entire country in 1994.

Between uproars and spa days

Hong Kong, July 28, 2019. Screaming, tear gas, gunfire. One, two, retreat from the front line, push forward. We are in the midst of Hong Kong's protests and uprisings last summer. We march with the masses, hiding behind the shields, seeing our comrades shouting commands, keeping moving, fainting, being carried away. Everything is chaotic and frightening, but still organized and controlled. For 15 minutes I hold my breath, my heart is racing and at the same time keeps skipping beats. It is suffocating.
